CES is an annual showcase for gadgets that see, hear and track your every movement. From facial recognition kits to home drone security systems, the tech world is reimagining how we keep track of ourselves and our possessions. The conference also offers panel discussions that connect privacy executives from Apple and Facebook with policymakers looking to restrict the use of these technologies.
Security Cameras
Security cameras help you keep an eye on your property, especially if you’re away from home. They also provide proof in the event of theft or vandalism, and can aid law enforcement in a criminal investigation.
A camera system can be installed in a number of ways, including wireless and wired. Wired cameras use video cables to send footage to a monitor or other viewing device, while wireless cameras use the Internet or another network to connect.
The main difference between the two is that wired cameras require long, obtrusive wires to run along walls or floors, while wireless models are more convenient for homeowners who move frequently or don’t need wires running through their homes.
Some cameras store videos on local storage, while others record them to a cloud server that can be accessed from any location with an Internet connection. Some cameras even have smart home integration, which allows voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant to communicate with them.
Motion Detectors
Motion detectors are a key part of any home security system. Their primary job is to sense when someone is in your home when you’re away and alert the monitoring center immediately.
Most motion detectors operate by sending radar waves that reflect off objects and walls across a room. When something moves, the radio waves interrupt or interfere with the wave and set off an alarm.
Some motion sensors work by using microwaves to detect movement. These are called passive infrared (PIR) motion detectors.
A dual-technology sensor uses both PIR and microwave technology to verify motion before it sounds an alarm. This reduces false alarms, but it’s not foolproof.
Doorbell Cameras
If you want to see what’s outside the door without having to be home, doorbell cameras are a great option. They have some really useful features that will help you deter porch pirates and keep your home safe.
Some of the best models come with motion detection and video recording. These features can be extremely helpful for catching suspicious activity, break-ins or burglaries and environmental hazards like snow or rain that could damage your property.
Some models also come with a live view feature, so you can watch someone at your door in real time, before they even ring the bell. This is a really useful feature to have if you have any packages that need to be delivered and you want to make sure they arrive on time.
Smart Locks
Smart locks are part of the gadget show home security, offering a new way to lock and unlock your doors. These devices connect to a smartphone or a hub (a device that allows you to control and monitor other smart home systems), allowing you to lock or unlock your door remotely.
They come in many shapes and sizes, and can be accessed via apps, keypads or fingerprint readers. They can also be paired with smart devices like lights and thermostats, letting you check on your home from anywhere as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection.
When choosing a smart lock, it’s important to think about where you’re planning to install it and how it will work with other devices in your smart home setup. Most smart locks rely on Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi connectivity to communicate with a smart home hub and your phone.
